Derogatory marks occur when a lender reports a negative incident, typically when you didn't pay back a loan as agreed. Derogatory marks can have a notable impact on your credit score and they are considered a high impact factor. These marks can remain on your report for 7 - 10 years, it's best to avoid them as much as possible.

What types of derogatory marks exist?

Derogatory marks occur for a variety of reasons. Generally they occur when an account is significantly past due for example accounts going into collections, charge-offs, repossessions and foreclosures. They can also happen as a result of bankruptcy and other public records.
